Grandmaster Parker Linekin started the original Academy of the Martial Arts School in Ocean Beach in 1972. Because he had grown up in the Ocean Beach/Point Loma area and wanted to stay close to the ocean and surf, he felt the area was the most logical place for his new school. One of Master Linekin’s other passions was surfing and he found that the sport complimented his Martial Arts. Master Linekin still enjoys surfing and the beach today, some 45 years later. The Academy of the Martial Arts name originated from the four arts (Kenpo, Ju-Jitsu, Tai Chi and Boxing) taught at the school. At that time the term “Mixed Martial Arts” did not exist and it would take 25+ years until the world learned of this state of the art training system through the growing popularity of UFC and Pride. The first school in Ocean Beach had over 100 students training with Master Linekin. Many of his original students from the Ocean Beach/Point Loma School that made black belt still keep in close touch with Master Linekin and often train with him. In 1995 George Jackson (owner of Scripps Ranch Gold's Gym) gave him an opportunity to start a satellite school in his gym. Master Linekin thought it was a great opportunity to see if the people in the area would support a school. Master Linekin and his wife moved to Scripps Ranch in 1992 because they loved the area. It was like living in the country and mountains while still having quick access to the beach and downtown. The people in the area were very active and a great group to live around. In 1999 Master Linekin decided to consolidate the Scripps Ranch and Ocean Beach schools. One of his students met Gerald Lafon (a world class judo teacher who had a school in the Scripps Mesa area) and he was looking for a school to share his space. Master Linekin and Mr. Lafon hit it off and The Academy of the Martial Arts School consolidated its two locations to the current Training Facility located at 9825 Carroll Centre Road - Suite 400 in the Scripps Mesa/ Miramar area. We call our new school the Martial Arts Warehouse. The school is currently located in a building with twenty foot high ceilings with over 2000 square feet of the best training floor in San Diego. Our walls are padded and the floor is spring loaded. It accommodates judo throws, karate kicks and throws, hard ju-jitsu throws and tai chi movements equally well. The school teaches regular group, private and seminar classes to the community covering street smart self defense, rape and abduction prevention, bully proofing and stranger danger since 1972. We have given classes to women’s clubs and the Boy and Girl Scouts in Scripps. The Martial Arts Academy has marched in the 4th of July parades and won several first place ribbons over the years. Master Linekin often donates his time and teaches many of his classes for free. Master Linekin believes it's his duty to give back to the community that has given so much to him. |
